Department History Year of Establishment:1989 Sports science is a discipline that studies the application of scientific principles and techniques with the aim of improving sporting performance. The study of sports traditionally incorporates area of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, human growth, biomechanics, exercise physiology, exercise biochemistry, sport genetics, sport injuries & management but also includes other topics such as nutrition & diet, anthropometry, kinanathropometry and psychology. Opportunities for students in these fields include employment as a physical education teacher, dietician or nutritionist, performance analyst, sports therapist, fitness center manager, strength and conditioning specialist. The sport Sciences students may also be well positioned to undertake further training to become an accredited fitness trainer, exercise physiologist and exercise consultant. Sports scientist is growing in demand and employment numbers, with the ever-increasing focus within the sporting world on achieving the best results possible. Through the study of science and sport, researchers have developed a greater understanding on how the human body reacts to exercise, training, different environments and many other stimuli. There are a variety of international governing bodies that oversee the practice of exercise professionals, to ensure high standards of practice. In the UK there is a British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) In the US there are various bodies such as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). The Department of Sport Science at Punjabi University, Patiala (Punjab) India came into existence on 29th September, 1989. This is the first department to start M.Sc. Sport Science and Ph.D. Sport Science in India. The first Ph.D. in Sport Science was awarded in 1993 and since then 42 students have been awarded Ph.D. degree in Sport Science. The research output from the department has continued to grow and teachers/ research scholars have published more than 200 research papers and 10 books.
